A third suspect involved in the Peñitas double homicide was arraigned Thursday morning.

Alejandro Lopez, 43, from Rio Grande City, is charged with capital murder for the deaths of Mario Morales and Maria Farias whose remains were found in a burned vehicle in Peñitas on Feb. 3.

Lopez was denied bond similarly to the initial two suspects who were arraigned Monday, 23-year-old Pedro Ismael Garcia and 38-year-old Ricardo Gonzalez.

According to Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Raul Gonzalez, the 2007 white Chevrolet Impala was found outside Lopez’s residence which had a gas can in the trunk.

The spokesman stated that investigators determined that Lopez was in Ricardo Gonzalez’s residence when the assault on Morales was taking place.

He added that Lopez assisted Ricardo Gonzalez and Garcia by placing Morales’ body inside the car they would eventually burn.

“Witnesses say they saw him in a black truck at the scene during the time of the fire,” Officer Gonzalez added.

The investigation remains ongoing.
