The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating an early morning one-vehicle rollover crash that left a 75-year-old Mission man dead.

In a news release, DPS identified the man as Ascencion Lopez Hernandez.

The crash happened at approximately 6:16 a.m. Thursday on Bentsen Palm Road north of San Lucas Street north of Palmview, according to a release.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Lopez was driving a gold Chevrolet Malibu with one passenger southbound on Bentsen Palm Road, north of San Lucas Street when he passed a vehicle traveling southbound on Bentsen Palm Road.

After passing the vehicle, Lopez over-corrected to return to the southbound lane to avoid hitting another vehicle traveling northbound, according to the release.

“As a result, the driver of the Chevrolet lost control, veered off the roadway onto the westside bar ditch, and rolled over,” the release stated.

The passenger was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Lopez died at the scene.

DPS continues to investigate the crash.
