Brownsville firefighters rescue teen trapped in mud at Jaime Zapata Boat Ramp
A teenage boy stuck waist deep in mud and surrounded by sharp oyster beds was rescued Saturday by the Brownsville Fire Department.
Fire officials said via social media that the department responded to the popular fishing spot at around 10:45 a.m. due to reports of a male trapped in the mud.
“Upon arrival, the teenage boy was observed sunken waist deep in the mud surrounded by sharp oyster beds,” the fire department said via Facebook. “The boy was sunken to the point that the mud created a suction effect making it extremely difficult for him to get out.”
Fire department personnel dug the boy out with shovels and displaced the water under him “using a class A extinguisher.”
“The boy was then carried to safety and transported to the local hospital for multiple lacerations sustained from the oyster beds,” the fire department said.
The fire department also said engine 8, medic 8, heavy rescue 113, 103 and truck 1 responded, adding that the agency is “proud of the personnel who acted quickly and efficiently to mitigate the situation.”
They also thanked a Cameron County constable who was on scene and assisted.
