Shooter in murder at Alamo McDonald’s sentenced to 45 years in prison

A 24-year-old McAllen man on Thursday pleaded guilty fatally shooting a man at a McDonald’s in Alamo and was sentenced to 45 years in prison, records show.
Alberto Angel Medina admitted to the murder of Raul Cantu Jr. in the McDonald’s parking lot at 1018 W. Frontage Road at approximately 11:47 p.m. on Aug. 20, 2024.
Medina was charged along with 28-year-old Jose Alberto Jimenez Jr., of Pasadena, Texas, 45-year-old Alamo resident Christina Louise Montemayor, and 32-year-old McAllen resident Carlos Alfredo Jasso.
Jimenez, Montemayor and Jasso have pleaded not guilty.
Police have said previously that they believe Cantu’s murder was gang and drug related. He had been shot multiple times.
“During the review of the McDonald’s camera footage, Investigators observed Raul Cantu Jr. walk through the parking lot towards frontage road where he made contact with two male subjects,” a probable cause affidavit stated. “Investigators observed Raul Cantu Jr. interact with the suspects on what appeared to be a transaction.”
Around this time, Jimenez arrived in a blue Ford Fusion.
“One of the male subjects later identified as ‘Los’ struck Raul with both his hands, while the second subject punched Raul Cantu Jr. with his left hand and pushed Raul Cantu Jr.,” the affidavit stated.
That’s when Medina pulled out a black handgun from his waistband and shot Cantu twice in his upper torso, according to the affidavit.
Investigators said in the affidavit that the men then left in a brown 2013 Chrysler 200 driven by Montemayor — Cantu’s girlfriend.
Alamo investigators were familiar with Montemayor from “previous encounters” so they reached out and asked her to come to the police department and provide a statement. She did so and said she just went to the eatery to get food for her kids.
However, she later recounted and said she went there because “Los” was going to give Cantu $100. She also admitted to picking up “Los” and Medina at 1301 19 ½ St. in McAllen and taking them to the McDonald’s to meet with Cantu.
She also claimed to not know the men, according to the affidavit. However, after the shooting she drove “Los” to the Motel 6 located at 700 W. Expressway 83.
“The defendant stated she heard shots being fired but did not see what happened,” the affidavit stated.
Montemayor has since bailed out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 bond as has Jimenez, who bailed out on a $25,000 bond.
Jasso, however, remains jailed on a $250,000 bond.
