TEA extends authority over LJISD through 2028

The Texas Education Agency announced Monday that it will extend the authority of the La Joya ISD Board of Managers through 2028.
The extension will go through Feb. 1, 2028, with the TEA citing progress in governance, financial integrity and academic performance.
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath informed district leadership in a Jan. 30 letter that the extension will allow LJISD to continue building on recent improvements before transitioning back to an elected school board.
The TEA took over LJISD on Feb. 1, 2024 following a state investigation and administrative hearings related to the district’s governance and financial oversight.
Additionally, Morath’s letter also announced Anita Chavez will step down from the board of managers effective immediately, adding that Valeria Vega has been appointed to replace her.
“Ms. Anita Chavez has given generously of her time and leadership during the past two years, and La Joya ISD is stronger because of her dedication to our students and community,” Superintendent Marcey Sorensen said in a news release. “We are deeply grateful for her service and the steady guidance she provided during this important chapter for our district, and we are excited to welcome Ms.Valeria Vega to the board as we continue working together to strengthen governance, improve student outcomes and ensure long-term stability and success for the students and families of La Joya ISD.”
Vega, who grew up in La Joya ISD, said joining the board is an honor and responsibility she holds close to her heart.
“Drawing from my professional experience and workforce training, I look forward to working alongside others who share a deep commitment to our students and to the continued growth of our community,” Vega said in the release.
