The Wylie girls basketball team finished the first half of District 9-6A play with an unblemished 8-0 record, with the latest result being a 45-39 win over Wylie East on Friday night at the Montgomery Center.
Wylie East took its largest lead at 20-15 after freshman Gracie Edge knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:25 left in the second quarter. The Lady Raiders also received aggressive play from junior forward Morgan Jennings, who scored six of her team-high 11 points in the first half.
Wylie East had several opportunities to extend its lead but was unable to finish shots, opening the door for Wylie.
Junior Ronelyse Hartfield kept the Lady Pirates (16-6, 8-0) within striking distance, scoring the final four points of the first half. Her last basket came on a steal and coast-to-coast layup that cut the deficit to 20-19 at the break.
This game was decided late in the fourth quarter.
With two minutes remaining and Wylie clinging to a 40-39 lead, Wylie East attempted to regain the advantage, but a 3-pointer from the right corner rimmed out. Hartfield grabbed the rebound and passed to junior Skylar Harvey, who spotted junior guard Shamya Johnson streaking down the court. Johnson finished the play with a layup to extend Wylie’s lead to 42-39.
Hartfield and Johnson each scored 11 points to lead Wylie, while freshman Sade Mathes added 10.
