It’s been a busy start to the season for the Plano East, Wylie and Wylie East wrestling teams.
Wylie East commenced the season Nov. 21 at the 16th Annual Heath Invitational.
The Raiders had one medalist, with Kaden Roach earning fourth place at 150 pounds. The day started off in heartbreaking fashion for Roach, who lost a 7-6 decision to Prosper Walnut Grove’s Kaleb Stepan in the first round. But Roach rebounded in a big way in the consolation bracket, which included a pin of Stepan in the consolation semifinals. However, a streak of four straight victories ended in the third-place match as Roach was pinned by Rockwall-Heath’s Nicholas Moreno.
Jake West came within one win of finishing as a top-four placer. Like Roach, West lost his first match of the day. However, West bounced back on the back side of the bracket, beginning with a win by forfeit followed by two consecutive pins. But his run came to an end after he was pinned by Lewisville’s Ethan Scarbrough in the 157-pound consolation semifinals.
Blake Moore (144 pounds) went 1-2 with a pin, while Jaden Phok (120), Connor Liu (126), Cameron Serna (138), Casey McCloud (165) and John Pugh (175) each finished 0-2.
Wylie East is back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Rockwall Tournament. The Raiders will host McKinney next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Williams Center.
Meanwhile, Wylie competed in its second tournament of the season, the Richardson Roundup, held Nov. 22, and the Pirates came away with three medalists.
Payton Maier earned second place at 126 pounds, Wyatt Richardson took third in the 285-pound weight class, and Brayden Baro placed fourth at 106.
Richardson lost his first match of the day but responded with four straight wins in the consolation bracket, including a win by fall over Dallas Kimball’s Anthony Urbina in the third-place match.
Noah Jagleski (120 pounds) went 2-2 with two pins. Jacob Gomez (144) also went 2-2 at Richardson with one pin and another win because of excessive injury time. Carson Cleveland (132) and Kaylan Wara (175) both finished 1-2.
Paxton Le (113), Troy Bassinger (138), Thomas Whitemire (150), Syed Ali (165), Bryce Elwart (175), Jayden Martin (190) and Tristan Yoder (215) also competed for the Pirates in Richardson.
Wylie began the season Nov. 14-15 at the Timber Creek Fall Classic.
The Pirates had five placers and crowned one champion.
Richardson completed a dominant 3-0 run through the heavyweight division with a first-period pin of South Grand Prairie’s Jesse Cantu in the championship match.
Jagleski placed fourth at 120 pounds, Maier took fourth at 126, Bassinger earned fourth at 138 and Yoder captured fourth at 215.
Wylie will also compete this weekend in Rockwall before wrestling Plano East and Prosper Rock Hill at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Montgomery Center.
Plano East last wrestled Nov. 21-22 at the Arlington Martin Reece Invitational.
Cameron Tran earned a spot on the medal stand by placing third at 106 pounds. He lost his first match of the day but then won his last four, including a second-period pin of Weatherford’s Kaleb Serda in the third-place match.
The Lady Panthers had one placer, with Sania Kasturi capturing fourth place at 120 pounds.
Adalynn Shockley (135) and Jessica Mathew (170) each went 1-2 with a pin, while Nathalia Itzep (125) was 0-2.
Back on the boys’ side, John McKinley (165) notched three wins, including one pin and two technical falls. Ozzie Thornton (144) picked up two victories, both via technical fall. Andy Santamaria (190) also won two matches. Hadi Siddiqui (144) went 1-2 with a win by forfeit. Nithil Vijayakumar (132) posted a 1-2 record with an 11-10 decision. Joshua Hoeppner (150) finished 1-2 with a pin, as did Humza Siddiqui (157) and Yener Asan (215).
Abdul-Baseer Syed (113), Michael Connor (126) and Bernie Cox (175) also wrestled for the Panthers at Arlington Martin High School.
