HARLINGEN — WaterWorks officials expect to find out Wednesday evening whether they’ll lift a notice alerting customers to boil water or continue after a waterline break.

A lab is expected to release test results on water samples between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Roy Rodriguez, the agency’s interim general manager, said Wednesday.

“I think everything’s going to be OK when we get the results from the lab,” he said during an interview.

The lab is incubating water samples taken from throughout the city for a 24-hour period to determine whether contaminants entered the water system, Rodriguez said.

“Very little went into the system,” he said, noting officials had shut down the city’s downtown water plant for the winter.

On Tuesday, officials issued the notice after finding “cloudy water” in a tank at the downtown plant, Rodriguez said.

“To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes,” the notice states. “The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.”

While officials have not determined the location of the water break, they don’t know when the break occurred, Rodriguez said.

“This could have happened days ago — weeks ago,” he said.

Weather changes may have caused the water break, Rodriguez said.

“Whatever makes the ground move — you get breaks,” he said.

The notice is requesting customers boil water before drinking.

But across town, many residents aren’t taking chances boiling water, buying up bottled water in stores.
