Contractor accused of scamming woman, 86, out of $61K in Brownsville

A 38-year-old man is in custody after Cameron County sheriff’s deputies arrested him on Monday over accusations he scammed a woman out of more than $61,000 over sewage system repairs at her property in Brownsville.
In a news release, the sheriff’s office said deputies met with an 86-year-old woman on Oct. 27, who said that in 2023 a contractor named Alejandro Diaz Hernandez offered his services to repair the sewage system at her property.
The woman hired the man, who began requesting money for materials, permits and plans, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office said Diaz continued requesting money from the unidentified woman through deception until September by claiming he needed money for permit fees, plans “and other excuses, when in fact he never even started the job.”
Diaz is charged with theft and is currently being held in the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center pending his first appearance.
The sheriff’s office said Diaz confessed and more charges may be pending.
