Edinburg man accused of fatal shooting caught on video indicted

The 33-year-old Edinburg man accused of shooting and killing a 26-year-old man by shooting him in the head with an “AR type rifle,” which was caught on camera, has been indicted and is scheduled for arraignment.
Freddy Mireles was indicted on Nov. 6 for murder following the death of Julio Cesar Soto Jr. and is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 1.
At around 9:22 p.m., on Aug. 17, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4513 Fe Drive in rural Edinburg regarding a person with a gunshot wound, which was later reclassified as murder, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Once there, deputies contacted three people outside the residence who were temporarily detained pending the deputies’ investigation.
Deputies found Soto with one gunshot wound to the front of his face.
According to the affidavit, one witness said that Mireles arrived with the unknown male who was later identified as Soto.
“The witness stated that he was outside the home when he heard what sounded like a gunshot inside the home,” the affidavit said. “He then saw Freddy running out the rifle and left in his red Corvette.”
A second witness said he was inside the house with Mireles and Soto when the incident occurred.
That witness stated that he was recording Soto singing with his cellphone as Mireles held an “AR type rifle.”
“Freddy picked up the AR type rifle and pointed it at the male victim and shot him in the head,” the affidavit said. “Freddy then left in a hurry … (taking) the AR type rifle with him along with a small purple colored handgun the male victim was holding in his hand.”
One investigator provided a photo line-up consisting of six people to a witness who identified Mireles as the person who shot the rifle.
“Sheriff’s investigators reviewed statements and video evidence that demonstrates sufficient probable cause to show that Freddy Mireles … committed the offense of murder,” the affidavit said.
Mireles remains held in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on more than $5 million in bonds.
