Alamo man scheduled for trial pleads guilty to Mission murder

A 42-year-old Alamo man who was ready to go to trial for murder instead decided to enter a guilty plea.
Eric Gonzalo Hernandez was accused of shooting and killing Mexican citizen 25-year-old Javier Cruz on or around March 5, 2022, according to the indictment.
Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios confirmed Monday that Hernandez pleaded guilty to the murder charge and is now scheduled for sentencing in January.
He had been set for jury selection on Friday, court records show.
At around 9:17 p.m. on March 3, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance on the 100 block of Sioux Road in rural Alamo, according to a news release from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office at the time.
Once there, deputies found Cruz’s body with apparent gunshot wounds.
Multiple witnesses told police that Hernandez shot Cruz after an argument, according to the release.
“Witness stated they heard gunshots and observed Javier fall to the ground while Eric left running from location,” the news release said.
The Mission Police Department arrested Hernandez later that day.
Hernandez’s bond was initially set at $2 million, but jail records show it is now $1 million. He’s remained there since his arrest.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 7.
