Barricaded subject arrested after Harlingen police fire pepperball rounds

A person is in custody after an hours-long standoff with Harlingen police Thursday that ended after authorities used pepperballs on the individual.

In a Facebook post just after 1 p.m., police said the U.S. Marshals contacted the Harlingen Police Department at approximately 9:15 a.m. in reference to a barricaded individual in the 1900 block of E. Washington St.

“The Harlingen Police Department SWAT Team was activated and responded to the scene to assist in bringing the situation to a safe resolution,” the post read. “After attempts were made to negotiate with the subject, non-lethal pepperball rounds were deployed into the area where the subject was located. Shortly thereafter, the individual exited the residence voluntarily and was taken into custody without further incident.”

Police did not identify the suspect or say in the post why the U.S. Marshals were at the location. That agency, however, is tasked with serving warrants on wanted individuals, among other duties.

Police said the individual was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene for exposure to the pepperballs and for any possible injuries.
