Painters have finished painting the front steps of Oak Lawn United Methodist Church in the colors of the rainbow, creating what senior pastor the Rev. Rachel Griffin-Allison calls “both a statement of sacred resistance that sends a message to all that “You will not be erased. “

The church, located at the intersection of Oak Lawn Avenue and Cedar Springs Road, decided to paint the steps in the wake of Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to Texas cities to remove all rainbow crosswalks or risk losing federal funds. Griffin-Allison said doing so was not a political act but instead a pastoral act because “God calls love to be visible, and love belongs in public.”

The new steps will be consecrated in a special ceremony at noon Sunday, Nov. 2, following Oak Lawn UMC’s morning worship services. Everyone is invited to attend.
