Longview native wins national FFA service-learning award

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK)– A Longview- native received the service-learning award at this week’s National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis.

Maggie Mayes of Longview founded ‘Carter’s Free Little Libraries,’ a project dedicated to selling agriculturally accurate books. She built, installed and stocked small, outdoor libraries throughout her community. Over four years, Mayes expanded from a single library to managing 21 permanent locations and three traveling libraries.

Mayes was among six other winners of the National FFA Agricultural Proficiency awards that were named during the second session of the convention on Thursday.

Mayes was recognized at the 2024 National FFA Convention for ranking among the top four in the nation for the Goat Production Proficiency Award.

Another Texas-native, Reven Brummond of Klein, won the ‘integrated systems’ award after she conducted seven research projects that involved ways to improve poultry healthcare through testing and research.

The National FFA Organization is a school-based youth leadership program with more than 1,042,245 student members as part of 9,407 chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
