Oak Lawn United Methodist Church has erected a new sign in front of the historic building with the newly-painted rainbow steps at the intersection of Cedar Springs Road and Oak Lawn Avenue. The sign, incorporating rainbows of its own, offers one more visible sign to the church’s commitment as an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and to the fight for justice, with a verse from the Bible’s Old Testament:

“Let justice roll down like water.”

The verse is Amos 5:24. In its entirety, the passage reads: “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” It is considered a prophetic call for an abundance of justice and righteousness emphasizing that God is the ultimate source of these qualities. 

It is also a verse often quoted by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
