Wichita Falls drill readies first responders for emergencies

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Clinical Educator for AMR, Michael Atwell is organizing a comprehensive training exercise for first responders, simulating a chaotic car wreck scenario to ensure preparedness for real-life emergencies.

The exercise involves multiple vehicles stacked on top of each other, requiring the fire department to stabilize the scene and triage several patients before transporting them to United Regional hospital.

“We’re doing, basically a practice scenario with the fire department, where we’ve got, multiple vehicles involved in a car wreck here stacked on top of each other where the fire departments had to come in and stabilize things,” Atwell said.

Atwell emphasized the importance of these exercises for educational opportunities and improving communication among first responders.

“There’s educational opportunities and everything, and that’s the main thing we want to do here. See how they work, see how we’re communicating. What can we do to improve it? You know, make sure that we’re always progressing and doing better,” Atwell said.

The exercise also aims to strengthen partnerships within the city, allowing different departments to practice handling mass casualty incidents together.

“This allows us to work with the fire department to practice these mass casualty incidences, because things like this don’t happen often, but when they do, they’re very chaotic,” Atwell explained.

By simulating these high-stakes scenarios, Atwell and his team hope to ensure that first responders are well-prepared to handle real-life emergencies efficiently and effectively.
