TxDOT wants to hear from you about its South Padre Island Second Access Project

Public workshops have been scheduled next month to update Rio Grande Valley residents on the progress made thus far in the state’s South Padre Island Second Access Project.

Scheduled for 5 p.m. virtually Wednesday, Nov. 5 and in-person Thursday, Nov. 6, the Texas Department of Transportation will host information workshops that will be open to the public and provide updates on the project’s history and the status of TxDOT’s environmental study.

The study explores alternate access across the Laguna Madre area to the Island, aiming to improve public safety and the flow of traffic to the Island during an emergency evacuation, TxDOT said in a news release.

The possible alternatives will be shown to attendees although “no formal presentation” will be planned at either workshop.

Wednesday’s virtual workshop will be held at TxDOT.gov by searching “South Padre Island Second Access.” Display boards, maps and other materials will be viewable there.

The in-person workshop, which will run through 7 p.m., will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center, located at 7355 Padre Blvd. on the Island.

Attendees can submit comments on the project online via TxDOT.gov, at the in-person workshop, or by emailing SPISecondAccess@txdot.gov.
