Planned Parenthood expanding services to include primary care at Valley clinics
Primary care services will now be provided at the Planned Parenthood South Texas clinics in the Rio Grande Valley, the nonprofit organization announced in a news release Thursday.
Same-day telehealth appointments, wellness examples and disease management — diabetes, thyroid disorders and cancer screenings — are among the basic primary care services available at these clinics in the Valley.
Weight loss support, anxiety and depression treatment as well as gender affirming services, birth control and STI testing and treatment will also be included at the clinics, where Planned Parenthood said “evidence-based, nonjudgmental, inclusive, and affordable care for patients of all genders” are provided.
Citizenship documentation does not have to be provided.
“Texans have been trusting Planned Parenthood South Texas with the most intimate aspects of their health care since 1939. But today we are about so much more than just sexual and reproductive health care,” Planned Parenthood South Texas President and Chief Executive Officer Laura Terrill said in the release.
A 2023-24 report showed that Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the U.S. provided an array of care including mental health services, and the procedure it’s more commonly associated with —abortions — made up just 4% of its services provided that year.
“Our expansion into primary care means that whether you need a reliable form of birth control, allergy medication in a hurry, or help managing high blood pressure, Planned Parenthood South Texas is a partner in health Texans can rely on,” Terrill added.
The nonprofit also pointed to regions such as Cameron County being federally designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area.
Clinics are located at 870 E. Alton Gloor Blvd., STE B, in Brownsville and at 712 N. 77 Sunshine Strip, Ste 18, in Harlingen.
