Duncan residents urged to join Great ShakeOut drill

DUNCAN (KFDX/KJTL) — Millions of people across the country are participating in learning earthquake safety and preparedness, especially those in Oklahoma.

On Thursday, October 16, Duncan Emergency Management urges all residents to participate in the annual Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. This is a yearly drill to help remind people about the protocol they should follow during an earthquake.

According to a Facebook post by the City of Duncan, in 2014, Oklahoma experienced 585 earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.0 or more, more than any state in the lower 48.

The earthquakes in Oklahoma are caused by the state’s proximity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which spans the central United States. Major earthquakes within the NMSZ could cause structural damage to the states surrounding them.

To participate in the Great ShakeOut, practice the earthquake protocol “Drop, Cover and Hold on” at 10:16 am on October 16.
