Winnsboro man faces maximum sentence over child injury

WOOD COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — Brandon Shane Albrightson, 48, of Winnsboro, was sentenced to two years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-State Jail Division for Injury to a Child.

The jury found Albrightson guilty of the offense on Tuesday, after less than an hour of deliberation. Albrightson previously had two misdemeanor assault cases in Wood County from 2022 that were still pending at the time of trial. He had also previously been put on probation in Oklahoma in 1996 for felony drug possession.

The jury deliberated and recommended the sentence of two years confinement; the maximum period allowed under law.

The evidence at trial showed that on Sept. 14, 2023, the Winnsboro Police Department responded to a father and two children in the lobby of the police department wanting to make a police report. The father told officers that the children had just arrived at his house from their mother’s residence, where their mother’s boyfriend, Albrightson, had “put hands on” the oldest child. The oldest child, 11, told officers that his mother became angry with him and struck him in the head with an open and closed fist multiple times and that Albrightson told the child to “fight me like a man” after shoving him against a wall. “It hurt”, the child said. The child also informed officers that both his mother and Albrightson were “drunk… and mean and aggressive.” The youngest child, 7, was also at the mother’s residence during the altercation and corroborated the oldest child’s account of the events.

Wood County Criminal District Attorney Angela Albers commented, “The Defendant had proven on more than one occasion that he not only is violent, but will continue to be violent without regard to consequences,” Albers said. “I am very pleased with the maximum sentence in this case. I am also grateful that we were able to achieve justice for this young child. The jury’s verdict sends an important message: that Wood County will protect its children and prosecute those who harm them to the fullest extent of the law.”
