The La Joya ISD school board unanimously voted to extend Superintendent Marcey Sorensen’s contract through 2030 with a base salary of $345,500.
The extension was approved at a meeting on Aug. 27 and was part of Sorensen’s annual evaluation. The contract’s employment is until June 30, 2030.
In a news release by the district, it states Sorensen has led major initiatives including the development of the five-year strategic place, balancing the budget and implementing instructional material.
“I am honored by the Board’s confidence and their commitment to working alongside me and my team in service of our students and community,” Sorensen said. “Together, we will continue to focus on ensuring excellence for every student, in every classroom, every day.”
The contract includes reimbursement of any reasonable expense by the superintendent in her job, such as airline tickets, hotels, meals, rental car, mileage, the cost of flowers/sympathy baskets for the death or illness of district employees.
The travel and business expenses will be annually subjected to review by the district’s independent auditors.
The superintendent will have access to a staff member to drive her car or a district vehicle when it is necessary to the performance of her duties, the contact also states.
There is a personal protection clause which lists that the district, at its expense, will provide these services in the event that the life or safety of Sorensen or her family is threatened or appears in danger due to her superintendent duties.
Additionally, board President Julian Alvarez said the annual evaluation is important in reinforcing the district’s focus on strong leadership.
“I am grateful to Dr. Sorensen and excited that we will be working together for the next five years,” Alvarez said. “We are very appreciative of the leadership she has demonstrated here in our great district and I am confident that under her leadership, we will continue to succeed.”
The contract states that at any time, the board may enter into a new contract with the super but in no event will Sorensen be paid less than the salary set forth in the current contract.
