Wichita County judge outlines budget and homelessness plans

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The 2026 budget for Wichita County has been finalized at $84.68 million, and for those who want to know where their tax dollars are being spent, one Wichita County judge has the answer.

Wichita County judge Jim Johnson said public safety will account for the “biggest chunk” of the budget.

“That’s been true for a long time and will continue to be true for 2026,” Johnson said. “It’s a pretty conservative budget; it sticks to the basic services that we have to provide.”

Judge Johnson said that upkeep for the courts, roads, and bridges will also account for a large portion of the budget.

In addition to the budget, Judge Johnson spoke on the partnership between the county and the City of Wichita Falls, especially with the new Homeless Advisory Committee’s first meetings underway.

“We’ve seen an uptick in the problem of homelessness, and A. of those people who are suffering and who are on the streets, but B. also our business owners and just the folks who are having to interact and, especially, work downtown, we wanted to tackle that problem,” Judge Johnson said.

Johnson said his commissioners, who are on the committee, said Tuesday’s meeting went great and that ideas for action are already being shared.

Those who wish to receive more information from the Wichita County Commissioners should visit their website and sign up for the monthly newsletter, which includes interviews with different elected officials about what is going on around the county.

“It was one of my goals to communicate to the public what we do, who we are, how they can get involved, and how they can know more,” Judge Johnson said.
