Edinburg police say a man driving a motorcycle has been arrested following an early Tuesday morning crash that resulted in his passenger being hospitalized.

Miguel Angel Garcia, 40, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of intoxication assault.

According to a news release, police responded to the northbound lanes in the 5500 block of South I-69C at about 2:25 a.m. Tuesday in regard to a major accident.

Police said officers discovered that a BMW motorcycle — operated by Garcia who had an unidentified female passenger — hit the rear of a blue Ford SUV.

“The impact caused both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle to be ejected,” the release said. “The motorcycle then slid across the roadway, struck a guardrail, and ricocheted back onto the roadway, where it was subsequently struck by a white Chevrolet Malibu.”

All of the occupants of the Ford and Chevrolet vehicles were unharmed, with the release adding that Garcia’s passenger sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police said the case remains under investigation.
