Jacksboro unveils 50-year-old time capsules for 150th anniversary
JACK COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — People in Jacksboro are taking a walk down memory lane as time capsules buried 50 years ago have just been unearthed.
50 years ago, during their 100th anniversary, Jacksboro residents sealed away a piece of history. Today, those capsules were dug up, just in time for the 150th celebration.
“We have the sesquicentennial on the 27th of this month, and they want to see how many people, maybe that are still around that wrote letters can maybe open and read the letters to their kids or grandkids or whoever they wrote it to, and just kind of have a little celebration for 150 year,” Mike Smith, City Manager of Jacksboro said.
For Smith, the moment is about more than old letters; he says it’s a bridge between generations.
“It’s just a remembrance from when it was originally buried. And I hope that it just brings a little bit of excitement, and more people will come out and put some things in the next time capsule”, said Smith.
Residents are already thinking of what to put in the next capsule.
“I want to at least put a letter in it. Then we’ve got some artifacts, so we may decide to place a piece of family history inside,” Brenda Tarpley, Jacksboro sesquicentennial committee member, said.
The 50-year-old mementos will be presented at the 150th celebrations starting September 26.
“We’ve got homecoming on Friday. The parade, lots of homecoming events. Then, we end the day with Summer Dean, somebody who is from Jacksboro getting to sing to her hometown. And we can’t wait to welcome her. Then on Saturday there’s lots of vendors, food vendors. Something for everyone,” Tarpley said.
Jacksboro is celebrating its 150th by honoring the past and looking toward the future.
