Los Fresnos man sentenced to 20 years for 2014 murder in Weslaco

A Los Fresnos man was sentenced to jail for his involvement in a 2014 murder that turned cold until his wife called police with new information a few years ago.
Alberto Davila, 54, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for the death of 29-year-old Daniel Salazar Burnias, court records show. He pleaded guilty to murder on Aug. 18.
At around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2014, police responded to a call regarding a one-vehicle crash in the 3600 block of East I-2 in Weslaco. It was there that they found Burnias dead inside his vehicle.
Investigators found various bullet holes in the vehicle and gunshot wounds on Burnias’ body. They also found a 40mm handgun at the scene.

The case was considered cold for years until Davila’s wife, Karen Sanchez Landeros, called Los Fresnos police.
On March 20, 2020, Weslaco police received a call from Los Fresnos police regarding someone having information about the cold case, according to former Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera.
Landeros said that she believed her husband was involved in the 2014 shooting.
U.S. Marshals and Weslaco police arrested Davila at his Los Fresnos residence on May 17, 2022, and he was given a $100,000 bond before bailing out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center nearly a month later.
With the assistance of Los Fresnos and Victoria police, Weslaco police officers managed to recover a weapon that was tested by the Texas Department of Public Safety for a firearm and bullet analysis.
Davila was taken back into custody Monday.
