Denney’s late touchdown powers Vaqueros to first-ever road win

UTRGV running back Nathan Denney scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:21 remaining as the Vaqueros defeated Prairie View A&M 27-21 during their first road game in program history Saturday at Blackshear Stadium in Prairie View.
The touchdown was the first points for the Vaqueros since a 40-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Brysen Gardener with 4:07 left in the first half.
UTRGV picked up right where it left off following a 66-0 victory in its first-ever game, scoring on three consecutive drives in the first quarter.
Wideout Tony Diaz opened the scoring for the Vaqueros, making an acrobatic catch in the back of the end zone on a pinpoint pass from quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger to give UTRGV an early 7-0 lead.
A 49-yard field goal by Gardener on the ensuing drive extended the Vaqueros’ lead to 10-0. Redshirt freshman TJ Dement added to it on the next possession, finding space outside and racing to the end zone from 21 yards to make it 17-0.
Prairie View A&M battled back, finally getting on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cameron Peters. The score sparked a 21-3 run by the Panthers, with quarterback Tevin Carter adding two touchdowns, including a 3-yard run with 13:00 left to give them their first lead of the game.
UTRGV wouldn’t be denied, answering with a six-play, 71-yard scoring drive capped by Denney’s 7-yard run to secure the 27-21 victory. Denney finished with 23 carries for 101 yards and one touchdown. Marburger added 263 passing yards and one touchdown.
The win improves UTRGV to 2-0 in its inaugural football season. The Vaqueros return home for their next two games, beginning with a matchup against Langston at 7 p.m. Saturday at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg.
