RICHARDSON — Wylie missed a potential game-tying 39-yard field goal with no time remaining in a 24-21 season-opening loss to JJ Pearce on Friday, Aug. 30 from Eagle-Mustang Stadium.
Junior quarterback Jabriran Blake engineered three second-half scoring drives after the Pirates (0-1) trailed 7-0 at halftime. He completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior Daylon Gordon in the third quarter and added touchdown runs of 3 and 2 yards in the fourth quarter. He finished the game 13 of 28 for 233 passing yards and rushed for 116 yards on 16 carries.
Wylie appeared to be down for the count after JJ Pearce senior running back Jeremiah Lyons scampered 18 yards for a touchdown and a 24-7 Mustangs lead with 9:37 remaining in regulation. He ran roughshod over the Pirates’ defense, finishing the evening with a game-high 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
JJ Pearce amassed 515 total yards of offense and ran 82 plays on the night, compared to 56 plays for Wylie.
The Pirates rallied to within 24-21 after a Blake touchdown run from three yards out with 2:11 remaining.
Wylie was given a chance to march down the field and win the game after senior Will McCoy recorded his second interception of the night with 1:23 remaining.
The Pirates moved into Mustang territory on a 25-yard pass play from Blake to Gordon and got as close as the JJ Pearce 12-yard line after an 11-yard run by Blake.
However, the Pirates moved backwards after back-to-back penalties for a false start, making Wylie’s field goal attempt longer. Head coach Jimmy Carter sent senior Logan Montgomery onto the field to attempt a 39-yard field goal with less than 10 seconds remaining, but it was well short of the mark and JJ Pearce (1-0) held on for the win.
Wylie will look to bounce back next Friday at home against Flower Mound (0-1).
