EDINBURG — It’s college football gameday in the 956 as the UTRGV Vaqueros are hours away from beginning a new era in the Rio Grande Valley.

At 7:02 p.m., to be precise, UTRGV will make program history as the Vaqueros kick off their inaugural season against Sul Ross State in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,000-plus at Vackar Stadium.

“We’ll have an unbelievable crowd, but it’s not just what’s going to be here in the stadium — it’s the tailgating, it’s all the pageantry and the spirit that will be around Vackar Stadium on Aug. 30,” UTRGV athletic director and vice president Chasse Conque said. “The buzz is real. When you’re in the community throughout the Valley you can feel it, you can see it. People are excited, and we’re so grateful for that.”

From the days of “UTPA Football – Still Undefeated!” to now with the roaring buzz that’s been years in the making, the time has arrived for UTRGV Vaqueros football.

There will be touchdowns, and there will be turnovers. There will be wins, and there will be losses. There will be success and there will be struggle — it’s football —but this is the Rio Grande Valley’s team. It’s in the name, after all.

“We can’t wait for it for these guys, for the Rio Grande Valley, for UTRGV — it’s going to be exciting,” UTRGV head coach Travis Bush said.

UTRGV is the only new college football program at the NCAA DI level this season and the first to join the NCAA DI ranks since Stonehill in 2022. The Vaqueros are the first brand new program to debut at the DI level since Kennesaw State started from scratch in 2015.

So today, Aug. 30, marks the dawn of a new day in the Rio Grande Valley — one that is filled with college football and all that comes with it.

“The community is fired up just as much as I am,” UTRGV defensive end Amari Pouncy said. “Everywhere I go, people tell me, ‘You guys are the NFL of our city,” and it makes me feel just grateful to be here playing with these coaches and these teammates.”

Kickoff between UTRGV and Sul Ross State will mark a historic moment, but the festivities are set to get started hours early around Vackar Stadium, the home of the Vaqueros.

Tailgating began around 2 p.m., the Vaqueros Walk at 4:45 p.m. in the H-E-B Tailgate Zone followed by a pep rally in the amphitheater. Gates opened at 5:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+. English and Spanish radio broadcasts also will be available.

The game will be broadcast live in English on Ultra 90.1 FM in the Rio Grande Valley and Pure Country 95.7 FM in Laredo.

The game will be broadcast in Spanish throughout the Rio Grande Valley and northern Mexico on KYWW 1530 AM Puro Tejano and KGBT-FM 98.5 La Preferida.
