Man charged with child sex crime dies after falling ill in Hidalgo County jail
A 55-year-old man charged with two counts of indecency with a child has died after falling ill while in custody.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Romolo Toscano, who was arrested on July 25 by the Progreso Police Department.
“During his time in custody, Mr. Toscano had been periodically transported to a local hospital for medical treatment due to ongoing health issues,” a news release stated.
On Monday, detention personnel noticed the man was not feeling well and after an evaluation by in-house medical staff, Toscano was transported to a hospital.
He died there Tuesday, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office and the Texas Rangers are investigating the circumstances of Toscano’s death.
