Wings & football: Edinburg’s newest place is ready

EDINBURG — With football season right around the corner, 32 fan bases are hopeful for good things to come this season.

Just like a new season brings hope, a new Edinburg restaurant, RGV Wings is also hoping for a strong turnout and to become people’s new wing place.

Some fan bases are eager for the season, knowing their team has a good shot at the championship. Other ones, let’s say, are driven by delusional thoughts of this year being their year (cough, Cowboys).

Regardless of how your team is looking, there is one thing certain with all fans. It’s that no matter if your team wins or loses, we all need to eat.

Taking the preseason to scout RGV Wings, I went there for lunch with my buddy Eddie to see what this new restaurant is about.

RGV Wings is located at 2113 W. Trenton Road in Edinburg, and we went a bit after 1 p.m.

With the restaurant just opening maybe a month ago, I went with an open mind to try this place out.

The location used to be a restaurant owned by a chef I’ve interviewed that was appearing in a Food Network cooking show. I always wanted to check them out for the food column, so I was a bit sad I missed the opportunity.

We were the only ones during our hour-or-so lunch at the wing place.

Getting all the attention for our lunch, we browsed the large menu which featured wings, burgers, some tacos, sides and desserts but I knew if I’m going to a wing place I have to try the wings.

I ended up ordering 10 boneless wings, with an Elote and garlic parmesan flavor and some fries. I know wing nerds are going to say boneless wings are just chicken nuggets but I don’t care, give me my nuggets.

My friend went the traditional route and got lemon pepper and garlic parmesan as well.

I’m not going to lie, the wings were a bit pricey. For about 10 boneless wings, it was about $14-15, which did not include the fries or the drink.

The wings themselves were good quality, especially the chicken itself.

I liked both flavors, with my favorite being the garlic ones. The elote ones were also good but not knowing what taste I would get from it, the wings tasted like buffalo sauce with parmesan but regardless the flavor was good.

The fries were probably the highlight for me but you do have to consider I love anything potato. They were all seasoned well, cooked to a perfect crisp.

My friend wings accidentally came with the same sauces that I order but the staff was quick to fix the mistake and gave him his lemon pepper wings. It worked out fine since my friend actually liked the elote wings more than anything else.

New restaurants are just like football teams starting the season. They put all their effort in the preseason getting everything just the way they want them, they train their team for the season ahead but no one can predicate the future.

Both are bound to make mistakes. It’s a new restaurant, it’s bound to happen but it’s about how they react and learn from it, just like your favorite team.
