The McAllen man described as looking like a “reptile” was sentenced to prison for murder on Friday.

Jayson Martinez Gonzalez, 37, was sentenced to nine years in prison after entering a guilty plea to murder for the death of 36-year-old Jesus Javier Sanchez, according to the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office.

That plea came following a jury trial that was about to go into deliberations.

His co-defendant, 48-year-old Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez Jr. from Edinburg, remains in custody and is currently scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in early September in order to obtain a trial setting, according to jail records and court documents.

Both were indicted in March 2023.

On Dec. 20, 2022, McAllen police responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Oakland Avenue in regards to an aggravated assault where Sanchez was shot multiple times and wasn’t responding.

Police made contact with a Marlene Natalia Rodriguez who stated she was asleep with Jesus Javier Sanchez when she heard gunshots and found him bleeding on the ground.

Rodriguez added that she saw a white vehicle leave the location.

One resident described the perpetrator to police.

“A resident in the area heard three loud pops and observed a light complected skinny male, with light brown hair, black pants and a black jacket walking west bound on Oakland Avenue from where the incident occurred,” the affidavit said.

Detectives responded to Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez’s residence in Alton where they made contact with his girlfriend Laura Saenz.

Saenz told police that Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez was with a male friend earlier that day and described him as looking like a “reptile” due to his face tattoos.

“Laura stated Reinaldo left in a hurry and told her that his name was being thrown in the mix in reference to what happened to Jesus,” the affidavit said.

Police later located Gonzalez who said he was with Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez inside his white Nissan Altima at all hours in the morning.

The next day, police interviewed Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez who stated that he saw a woman shoot Jesus Javier Sanchez multiple times and described her appearance.

Detectives located surveillance camera footage in the area prior to and after the shooting and confronted Gonzalez with the images they managed to obtain.

“Jayson provided details about the crime scene that only an individual that was there would know,” the affidavit said. “Jayson admitted to wearing face makeup and a wig to show the facial features of a woman the day of the incident.”

Despite the admission, Gonzalez said that he saw Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez shoot Jesus Javier Sanchez multiple times with a handgun.

When detectives tried talking to Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez again, he requested an attorney.

Jesus Javier Sanchez died from his injuries the next year on Jan. 2, 2023.

Reinaldo Rafael Sanchez was in custody for days before being released on $90,000 in bonds on Dec. 29, 2022. However, he was booked on April 4, 2024, and remains in custody, jail records show.
