VIDEO: Deputies, Bystanders rescue victim from burning vehicle near Crockett

HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — Deputies from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of bystanders, were able to rescue a person trapped in a burning vehicle on Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a major accident on SH 21 West outside of Crockett involving two vehicles. Authorities said there were major injuries, including a person who was pinned inside a burning vehicle. First aid was provided, and attempts to contain the fire and remove the trapped person began.

“With the help of bystanders and other agencies, our deputies were able to get the victim removed from the burning vehicle and begin giving first aid to both victims of the wreck,” the sheriff’s office said.

Houston County Sheriff Zak Benge said when he took office, he expressed the need to equip all deputies with the equipment needed to put out a fire. During this event, deputies used three fire extinguishers to help remove the victim, and the sheriff said that without this, the victim would have been severely burned.

The sheriff’s office is now looking to recharge the fire extinguishers and get more for the remaining deputies.

“I would like to thank the bystanders for their assistance to help a fellow human being in a great time of need,” Benge said. “I would like to commend the officers on scene for their ability to act and remain calm during this very stressful situation.”
