Two South Texas men have been indicted for being in possession of, transporting and selling a white Bengal tiger and a spider monkey.

Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Mejia have been indicted on charges of possession of prohibited wildlife and unlawful transportation and sale of wildlife, court records show.

On June 26, Gonzalez was arrested in Hidalgo County. An arrest warrant for Mejia was issued on June 24 and executed on Aug. 14. He was arrested in Brownsville.

Gonzalez is also facing a possession of controlled substance charge after authorities found tranquilizers for wildlife and is also accused of illegally transporting and possibly selling a spider monkey, according to the indictment.

Mejia made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Betancourt in Brownsville federal court Wednesday morning.

He received a $50,000 cash bond with a $5,000 deposit.

As for Gonzalez, he is scheduled for a final pre-trial conference before U.S. District Judge Randy Crane in McAllen federal court on Aug. 29, court records show.

He received a $50,000 cash bond with a $3,000 deposit. Gonzalez is currently free on the bond.
