NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KETK)– The Nacogdoches City Council recently approved a contract between Nacogdoches and Exhibit Concepts, Inc. that will allow the city to take its next steps in creating a permanent history exhibit for the historic Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Zion Hill was established in 1878 and was home to one of the oldest African American Baptist congregations in Texas. The church also served as a social and religious center for African Americans in Nacogdoches.
The Zion Hill congregation moved to a new location in 1987, and the building has been vacant since. After undergoing a complete restoration, it is now open to the public.
The exhibit is designed to highlight Zion Hill and its history, along with its lasting legacy in the community, while preserving the stories of Zion Hill for future generations. The exhibit will also preserve the church’s history through collection days, oral history recordings and photograph
gathering.
“The City of Nacogdoches looks forward to working hand in hand with the community to bring this project to life. Together, the history of Zion Hill Baptist Church will be preserved through stories of faith, resilience, and community that continue to inspire today,” the City of Nacogdoches said.
For questions regarding the exhibit, residents should contact the Nacogdoches Historic Sites at historicsites@nacctx.us or call 936-560-4441.
