School board member named provost of TSTC’s Harlingen campus

Texas State Technical College announced Tuesday Gina Cano-Monreal has been named provost of its Harlingen campus.
The appointment was effective July 29, according to a news release.
“For 17 years I’ve been honored to serve TSTC and to witness the talent and heart behind its mission,” Cano-Monreal said in the release. “Becoming provost of the Harlingen campus is both a professional and personal milestone.”
Cano-Monreal previously served as TSTC’s associate vice chancellor for instructional shared services, with the release noting she supported 12 of its campuses across the state. She has also been an instructor at TSTC as well as mentored faculty in developing high quality course content, according to the release.
“TSTC is making significant investments to expand premier technical training in the Rio Grande Valley,” Jonathan Hoekstra, TSTC’s executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer, said in the release.
“The appointment of Dr. Gina Cano-Monreal as provost of the Harlingen campus reflects the College’s commitment to bringing one of its most valuable resources — strong leadership — to this vital region of Texas.”
The Harlingen native’s educational background includes receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the Chaminade University of Honolulu, a Master of Science degree with a concentration in virology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a doctorate in microbiology and immunology from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
TSTC also noted Cano-Monreal’s commitment to serving her community by being a member of the Harlingen Community Improvement Board for 10 years, the past president of the Junior League of Harlingen and a member of the Family Crisis Center’s Advisory Committee.
“I am committed to this campus’s success and proudly continue the legacy of my father, who taught at TSTC for more than 30 years, and my grandfather, who chaired the Auto Mechanics program for 20 years,” Cano-Monreal said.

Currently, Cano-Monreal serves on the Harlingen CISD board; fellow trustee Eladio Jaimez was previously named as provost of TSTC’s Harlingen campus last year.
Casi Bowers, an associate manager for TSTC’s Campus Marketing & Communications, said Jaimez “remains an essential part of the provost’s office as associate provost with a community relations focus.”
“The college understands the importance of community relations in the dynamic RGV community,” Bowers said when asked if Jaimez assisted with the transition. “Eladio undoubtedly is a source of support for Dr. Cano-Monreal as she steps into the provost’s office.”
