Tyler Junior College professor elected as Texas Chefs president

TYLER, Texas (KETK)– Tyler Junior College (TJC) culinary arts professor Larry Matson has been named president of the Texas Chefs Association (TCA).

It was announced that Matson will serve as president during the TCA’s annual convention last weekend. Matson will begin his tenure as president on Sept.1, and it will be a two-year term.

“I am excited to work with our chapters throughout the state, not only to recognize the work of Texas chefs but also to promote the education of culinary students as well as the growth and career advancement for current chefs,” Matson said.

After years of working as a professional chef, Matson has spent the past few years helping develop TJC’s culinary arts program. Matson also previously served as director of culinary programs for the International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Dallas.

Under Matson’s leadership, the TJC’s culinary arts program offers the following certifications:

  • Basic and advanced baking and pastry
  • Basic and advanced culinary
  • Basic and advanced hospitality and restaurant management
  • Basic and intermediate food handlers

The culinary arts program also teaches students basic techniques in food safety, kitchen equipment and cooking, including fundamental principles of knife and food handling as well as nutrition and menu management.
