Severe thunderstorm with hail expected soon in Edinburg, McAllen area

The McAllen emergency management system has begun alerting residents of the chance for a severe thunderstorm at 6 p.m. today.

“This storm may create extremely strong and damaging winds, large hail, severe lightning, which can cause damage to property, severe injury, or death,” the alert messages sent via text reads.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northeastern Hidalgo County in deep South Texas.

The storm system was located near Linn moving southwest at 15 mph and with 60 mph wind gusts, and quarter size hail.

“Hail damage to vehicles is expected,” the NWS warned. “Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.”

San Manuel, Linn, Faysville, the Edinburg North High School area, Red Gate, the vicinity of the Edinburg South Texas International Airport and McAllen are among the locations where storm activity is expected.
