JACKSONVILLE, Texas (KETK)– Following the passing of House Bill 14-81 in June, Jacksonville ISD officially approved the restriction of cell phones in their district.
One parent, Jose Lara, said before the meeting that he was surprised about the cell phone ban on campus, but after learning more, his stance changed. He said it would have a positive impact in the classroom.
“I don’t think they should be able to use them in school or during classes or anything like that, like zero or maybe zero tolerance during class,” parent Lara said.
However, one concern was raised by other parents: what happens in case of an emergency?
“They do need their cell phone because in case anything happens in school, and then all the parents worry, and they’re the first thing that we do as a parent, as grandparents, we try to locate it with them first,” parent Patricia Lopez said.
Communications Director Grace Traylor said this new policy will feel similar to previous cell phone policies the school has already had in place.
“It won’t be much different from what we’ve had,” Traylor said. “We instituted a cell phone policy last year at all our secondary campuses.”
Traylor also added that, because of the rules from last year, the students should already be used to putting their phones away.
“Worked really well and I think everybody is on board with how much that helps learning,” Traylor said.
Jacksonville ISD said they understand there may be more questions from both parents and students, but they can expect details on the full policy on Tuesday.
