WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The Wichita Falls Police Department got a glimpse of its possible future during the 20th graduation ceremony of the Wichita Falls Junior Police Academy.
The weeklong program brought together local youth for hands-on training with WFPD officers and other emergency responders. Cadets took part in a wide range of activities designed to give them an inside look at law enforcement and public safety careers.
“We teach them all aspects of law enforcement within our department, as well as other outside agencies such as AMR, dispatchers and firefighters,” said Officer Brian Arias, one of the department’s public information officers. “The overall thing is full transparency. We want them to experience and see it and hear the stories about what it takes to serve and protect.”
The academy offered cadets opportunities to participate in scuba diving, SWAT training, speed patrol exercises and dispatch center operations. The program aims to build trust between young people and law enforcement while providing insight into public service roles.
“I think if someone wanted to do this, it’s a great experience,” said Autumn Vasquez, a Junior Police Academy graduate. “There’s nothing wrong with it. You get to learn, see new people and learn new things about the academy—especially if you don’t have a big understanding of the police academy.”
“It’s pretty fun,” said fellow graduate Eli Stockton. “Just sign up and you’ll see. It’s a pretty good idea. You get good exercise and an experience.”
Graduates were recognized with certificates of completion during the ceremony, which ended with a celebratory slice of cake.
The Junior Police Academy, now in its 20th year, continues to serve as a unique opportunity for local youth to connect with first responders and explore potential careers in law enforcement.
Although the Academy is no longer accepting applications at this time, you can visit their website to learn more about when the next opportunity to sign up is.
