Texoma Sports Hall of Fame 2025 Inductee: Harley Sewell
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The seventh annual Nexstar Sports Awards and Hall of Fame banquet kicked off at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2025, inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the campus of Midwestern State University.
The Texoma Sports Hall of Fame was founded along with the annual Nexstar Sports Awards in 2019, honoring local legends who left their mark on Texoma athletics and enshrining them among the most talented athletes Texoma has ever seen.
Each year during the Nexstar Sports Awards, several athletes who called Texoma home are added to the Nexstar Sports Hall of Fame. In 2025, four individuals and one team were inducted into the Nexstar Sports Hall of Fame.
2025 Inductee — Harley Sewell (Saint Jo)
Eight decades after rising to prominence, Harley Sewell is still a recognizable name in Saint Jo.
In fact, the Saint Jo Panthers’ football field is named in Sewell’s honor, dedicated back in 2007.
Sewell’s resume as an athlete is lengthy. He played both ways for the University of Texas in the 1950s, playing on the offensive and defensive lines. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound lineman was a part of two Southwest Conference championship teams with the Longhorns.
Sewell earned All-Conference honors twice, as well as All-American recognition during his final season in 1952.
Sewell was also named Defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl during his senior season, with Texas shutting out Tennessee by a final score of 16-0, holding the Volunteers to just 32 total yards of offense and allowing -14 rushing yards
After college, Sewell was selected 13th overall in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, becoming a starting right guard.
Sewell played 11 years in the NFL, 10 for Detroit and one for the Los Angeles Rams, winning a pair of NFL Championships in 1953 and 1957 and earning Pro Bowl honors four times. After retiring from professional football, Sewell worked as a scout for the Rams.
Sewell was named to the Texas Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
Sewell passed away on December 17, 2011, at the age of 80.
