2025 Nexstar Sports Awards: Game of the Year
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The seventh annual Nexstar Sports Awards and Hall of Fame banquet kicked off at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2025, inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the campus of Midwestern State University.
Across the 10-month sports season, with over a thousand individual games involving Texoma teams to choose from, there are a few high-stakes, high-pressure games that won’t soon be forgotten.
Three games from the 2024-2025 sports season were nominated for the 2025 Game of the Year:
- Jacksboro Tigers vs. City View Mustangs — Football
- Holliday Eagles vs. Blue Ridge Tigers — Football
- Nocona Lady Indians vs. Muenster Lady Hornets — Basketball
WINNER — Nocona vs. Muenster (Girls’ Basketball)
The eighth-ranked Lady Indians faced off against the rival Lady Hornets for the third consecutive year, with a trip to the UIL Class 2A Division 1 State Semifinals on the line on February 20, 2025, at Legacy High School in Wichita Falls.
Nocona opened the game well in control, but a second-half surge from Muenster put the Lady Hornets in front by seven points with 4:20 left in the game.
The Lady Indians wouldn’t go down easily, forcing multiple turnovers to spark a 7-0 run and continuing to play stingy defense in the final minute.
When a shot at the buzzer wouldn’t go, the game went into overtime. Nocona led by three points with just seconds remaining in overtime, when Muenster’s Emma Walterschied was fouled beyond the arc.
Waltershied headed to the free throw line, connecting on all three shots, tying the game and forcing a second overtime period.
The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Hornets 10-8 in the second overtime period, holding on to win 64-62, advancing to the UIL State Semifinals en route to the program’s first state title in school history.
