2025 Nexstar Sports Awards: College Male Athlete of the Year
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The seventh annual Nexstar Sports Awards and Hall of Fame banquet kicked off at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2025, inside D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the campus of Midwestern State University.
The nominees for College Male Athlete of the Year included three male athletes who attended and played for a college or university located within Texoma during the 2024-2025 school year.
The three nominees for the 2025 College Male Athlete of the Year are listed below:
- Seth Bearden — Midwestern State University Men’s Golf
- Mere Escobar — Midwestern State University Men’s Soccer
- Eric Maisonet — Vernon College Baseball
WINNER — Mere Escobar (MSU Men’s Soccer)
Mere Escobar is the now three-time defending College Male Athlete of the Year.
Escobar graduated from Midwestern State University as the school’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 60 goals in his five-year career.
Last fall, Escobar scored 16 times, adding 10 assists in his final season with the Mustangs.
Escobar was again named an All-American, becoming only the third player in program history to earn that honor across three seasons.
Escoar was named the South Central Region Player of the Year, leading the Mustangs to their fourth consecutive LSC Tournament Championship and into the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
