WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — All across the Wichita Falls region, nature lovers are being called to grab their phones or cameras and step outside, as part of the 10th annual City Nature Challenge.

Taking place from April 25 to April 28, the event invites people of all ages and backgrounds to photograph and document the wildlife in their communities, contributing to one of the world’s most significant community science efforts. Launched in 2016.

The challenge has grown from just 1,000 participants to a global movement involving hundreds of cities.

The Wichita Falls region, which includes Archer, Baylor, Clay, Foard, Jack, Hardeman, Montague, Wilbarger, and Young, is participating in its 5th year.

Lynn Seman, Master Naturalist, says the impact this challenge has had on the environment has been incredible.

“It helps us know what’s out there and what should be out there and what should not be out there. Because, during the challenge, we also get observation of the invasive species. And in some in some ways, that’s a good red flag to show us, hey, this is not supposed to be there,” Seman said.

Participants will use the free iNaturalist app and website to upload their footage and identify species.

“That app is a wonderful resource that is supported by a nonprofit. And they allow you to take photos of any living thing or any evidence of a living thing. So, not only can you take photos of plants insects, animals, birds, you can take pictures of animal tracks,” Seman said.

So, whether it’s a flower in your front yard or a squirrel in the park, snap a photo and submit. You’ll be joining a global effort to better understand the natural world.
