‘Completely out of hand’: Keeno’s Beef Jerky shuts down amid high meat prices

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A popular beef jerky business has closed its doors after more than 10 years in business.

Keeno’s Beef Jerky shut down operations two weeks ago, surprising local shoppers.

Former owner Gary Keeney said rising meat prices are what drove him to the decision to close for good. According to Keeney, his accountant said the business was losing around $50,000 a year, making it an unsustainable venture.

“It didn’t matter how much volume we did. The more volume we did, the more we had to buy, the more marinades we had to buy, the more seasonings we had to buy,” Keeney said. “Everything had at least doubled, tripled, and the meat bill, like I said, was just completely out of hand.”

Keeno’s was known around the country. Keeney said he’s sold at least a bag in every state and also overseas.

A BBQ joint has taken over the former storefront by one of Keeney’s family members. Keeney plans to sell his homemade seasoning at the old store, and he hopes to sell seasoning in retail stores soon.
