Scouts flock to MSU for annual merit badge college

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL)— Several scouts from across the Northwest Texas Council and beyond have two more badges to put on their sashes after the annual merit badge college at Midwestern State University.

Scouts from as far away as Tyler made their way to Wichita Falls to spend their day earning two different merit badges, some of which are required to earn the Eagle Scout rank. What makes the annual merit badge college program special to the council is the partnership with Midwestern State University.

Troop 2 Scoutmaster Jessie Mitchell said it takes a weight off the shoulders of both leaders and scouts at the troop level when it comes to merit badge coursework.

“It is an amazing help to us because they actually bring in experts in their field to teach the merit badges,” Mitchell said. “And so, the kids get a lot more information out of it, and they get a lot better education than if we were trying to do it at the troop level.”

Over the course of the day, merit badges like sustainability, plumbing, and weather were also taught just to name a few. The wide range of courses ensures the Northwest Texas Council remains set on the goal of the Boy Scouts of America to build well-rounded youth and prepare them for adulthood.
