Traffic stop in Hidalgo leads to seizure of 175 pounds of cocaine
Two Mexican nationals residing in McAllen were arrested Friday after authorities found them with approximately 175 pounds of cocaine following a traffic stop, according to a criminal complaint.
Daniel Lopez-Perez and Jorge Antonio Lara Oseguera are charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, court documents show.
On Friday, a Hidalgo County Constable Precinct 4 marked unit conducted a traffic stop on a gray Chevrolet Colorado solely occupied by Lopez-Perez in Hidalgo.
Lopez-Perez consented to a search of his vehicle which resulted in the discovery of 30 bricks wrapped in cellophane inside a gray duffel bag located in the bed of the vehicle, the complaint said.
The bricks field tested positive for cocaine and weighed around 84 pounds, according to the complaint.
Lopez-Perez then told law enforcement that he had more cocaine at his residence in McAllen which he shared with Lara Oseguera and provided consent to search it.
“Shortly thereafter, members of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as well as other law enforcement agencies conducted a consensual search at Lopez-Perez’ residence,” the complaint said.
Authorities observed an unknown male exit the residence and walk northbound away from the residence before detaining him and identifying him as Lara Oseguera.
A search of the residence revealed 35 more bricks wrapped in cellophane containing cocaine that weighed around 91 pounds.
These additional bricks were found inside a yellow plastic crate located in the garage.
Lopez-Perez provided a statement saying that he planned to deliver the cocaine found in the vehicle to another person who was to transport the drugs to an unknown northern destination in the United States.
He added that he would be paid for the successful delivery of the load of cocaine.
Lara Oseguera also provided a statement saying that he knew there was cocaine inside the residence and knew Lopez-Perez planned to transport the drugs.
He added that the cocaine had been stored there for over a month.
The two men made their first appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Juan F. Alanis Monday morning in McAllen federal court.
