Bob on Business: Fort Worth federal building made list of properties government wants to unload

Two dozen Texas properties were on the list of federal properties that the U.S. General Services Administration is looking to sell. Fort Worth’s Fritz G. Lanham building was on the list, which was on the GSA’s website on March 4 before the list disappeared the next day. GSA officials said they received a great response from the list and would update it in the future. “We anticipate the list will be republished in the near future after we evaluate this initial input and determine how we can make it easier for stakeholders to understand the nuances of the assets listed,” a GSA spokesperson said. “As we stated in our press release, ‘GSA will continuously review and update the list of non-core assets.’”What is the Fritz Lanham building, you may well ask. Located at 819 Taylor St., the building is named after Fritz Garland Lanham, a Congressman who was born in Weatherford and served in the U.S. House from 1919 to 1947. Designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick and Thomas E. Stanley, the building was completed in 1966. The lobby features “Challenge of Space,” a 14-by-32-foot abstract painting by Seymour Fogel. Fogel once served as an apprentice to the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The oil on plaster painting was commissioned through the Fine Arts in New Federal Buildings program. The Fritz G. Lanham federal building serves as GSA’s regional office for the Greater Southwest.More wholesale clubs in the cards for Dallas and Fort Worth BJ’s Wholesale Club has already confirmed plans to open a location in southwest Fort Worth at 5901 Altamesa Blvd. On March 6, the company indicated it plans more sites in the North Texas area. The announcement was short on specifics, but did say the Massachusetts-based warehouse club brand plans to “open 25-30 clubs over the next two fiscal years, including several clubs set for the Dallas-Fort Worth area starting in early 2026.”“We are eager to continue our expansion by bringing unbeatable value, convenience and assortment to the Dallas-Fort Worth community,” said Bob Eddy, chairman and CEO of BJ’s Wholesale Club. “Economic expansion and a growing population make Texas a great fit for us.
