Starr County man gets 3 years on weapons possession charge

A 46-year-old Starr County man was sentenced to three years in federal prison for possessing multiple firearms while being a convicted felon, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.

Rosvel Gonzalez, who pleaded guilty on Nov. 21, 2024, was taken into custody after an undercover law enforcement officer attempted to sell a firearm to Gonzalez in September.

Authorities searched Gonzalez’s home and found an additional eight firearms and “several amounts of ammunition,” stated the release.

During their investigation authorities found that Gonzalez had been previously convicted for possession of marijuana as well as a prior conviction for the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.

“As a convivcted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms per federal law,” stated the release.

Gonzalez was sentenced Friday by Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Crane to 36 months in federal prison immediately followed by three years of supervised release.

He will be in custody until being transfer to a Bureau of Prisons facility that has yet to be decided.
