Gregg County encrypting radio channels to protect officers and citizens

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office said on Thursday they will switching their emergency communications to encrypted radio channels.

The decision to encrypt radio channels was made out of caution for for crime victims, witnesses and for the safety of Gregg County first responders.

Gregg County Chief Deputy Craig Harrington said that the move was made to prevent sensitive information like GPS locations from being exposed during emergency calls.

“Recently we have seen an uptick in information being released over social media as well as showing the GPS location of calls for emergency service” Harrington said.

Harrington also acknowledged how encrypting their radio communications will better protect the identities of Gregg County residents.

This change comes one day after the Longview Police Department announced a similar move to encrypt their police scanner traffic.
