Low-income Tarrant County residents can get free tax return assistance. Here’s where

Fort Worth-area residents who earned $67,000 or less last year can get free help with their tax returns this coming season. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, known as VITA, is offering low-income residents in Tarrant County free assistance filing their 2024 taxes now through April 15, the due date for filing individual returns. United Way of Tarrant County, which administers VITA, will aid any person or household with an annual income of $67,000 or less. The nonprofit organization serves all 64 ZIP codes in Tarrant County. Deanna Titzler, executive vice president and chief of communications and marketing, said the program falls under United Way’s financial empowerment impact area, which aims to create a stronger financial future for every generation of Tarrant County residents. United Way supplies help by uncovering the root causes of challenges in the community and then finding the best ways to solve them — whether that means partnering with other organizations or creating new programs, according to the organization’s website. In 2024, VITA clients received on average $1,700 in refunds, Titzler said. Since 2010, VITA has saved Tarrant County residents over $22 million in tax preparation fees.“Our clients not only save on tax preparation fees, but we do the filing on their behalf, helping them get a refund as quickly as possible,” Titzler said. “To add more assistance we are ensuring Tarrant County residents will receive qualifying benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.”United Way is also seeking volunteers to help with the program. Volunteers serve as tax preparers, office assistants, intake specialists, quality reviewers and interpreters. Free training is provided, and background checks are required.Clients should be prepared to bring:A photo ID
